At Focus on Function, we are committed to listening to the needs of our community and continuously innovating our services to meet those needs and ensure optimal job satisfaction of our team members. Recently, we had the privilege of hosting an occupational therapy student who conducted a comprehensive project on the potential expansion of our adult-based OT services to include adolescents. This project provided valuable insights and highlighted several key areas that could benefit from specialised OT services for adolescents. Here, we share the key findings, our commitment to innovation, and our plans for the future.
Key Findings from the Project
- Shortage of Adolescent Occupational Therapy Services
Our research confirmed a significant shortage of occupational therapy services specifically tailored for adolescents. This age group often falls into a gap between child and adult services, leading to unmet needs during a critical developmental period. Adolescents require tailored interventions that address their unique challenges and support their transition into adulthood. Discussions with the Head of Learning Support at the local public high school revealed that only 10% of high-need adolescent students currently have access to an OT. The reliance on out-of-town OTs has resulted in a lack of engagement, limited sessions, and suboptimal outcomes. - Need for Professional Development
There is a clear need for further professional development among occupational therapists to boost their confidence and competence in working with adolescents. This includes specialised training in adolescent development, communication strategies, and intervention techniques. Enhancing our therapists’ skills will enable them to provide the highest quality care to this age group, addressing their specific needs effectively. - Importance of Engagement and Rapport
Building strong relationships and rapport with adolescent clients is crucial. Engagement strategies that resonate with this age group are essential for effective therapy. Adolescents benefit greatly from a therapeutic approach that values their input, fosters trust, and encourages active participation. Understanding their unique perspectives and creating a supportive environment are key components of successful therapy. Equipment shortages and the lack of OT access to obtain funding have further reduced student participation, highlighting the need for local, dedicated OTs. - Puberty, Relationships, and Sexual Health Services
Adolescents have unique needs related to puberty, relationships, and sexual health. There is a pressing need to incorporate these topics into occupational therapy programs to provide holistic support that addresses all aspects of adolescent development. By including education and support on these topics, we can help adolescents navigate these critical areas of their lives with confidence and understanding. The need for services in these areas was a priority identified in our discussions with local schools. - Mental Health Considerations
Further research is needed to fully understand and integrate mental health considerations into our adolescent OT programs. Adolescents face numerous mental health challenges, and our services must be equipped to address these effectively. Integrating mental health support into our programs will ensure that we provide comprehensive care that addresses both the physical and psychological needs of adolescents. A literature review highlighted the importance of addressing mental health, noting significant developmental changes such as pre-frontal cortex development and the identity formation process. - Independent Living and Social Skills Support
Ongoing support for independent living skills and social skills is essential for adolescents as they transition to adulthood. These skills are critical for their daily functioning and long-term success. Our literature review and needs assessment underscored the unique transitional stage of development that adolescents experience, marked by significant occupation-related development, hormonal changes, and the quest for identity.

Our Commitment to Innovation
Based on these key findings, we are excited to announce our plans to expand our services to include a dedicated adolescent occupational therapy program. This expansion reflects our commitment to being responsive and innovative in meeting the needs of our community.
- Specialised Training Programs
We will develop and implement specialised training programs for our occupational therapists to ensure they are well-equipped to work with adolescents. This training will cover the unique developmental, social, and psychological needs of this age group. By investing in our therapists’ professional development, we aim to provide the highest standard of care. - Holistic and Inclusive Services
Our adolescent OT services will be holistic, addressing physical, emotional, and social development. We will include components on puberty, relationships, and sexual health to ensure comprehensive care. Our goal is to support adolescents in all aspects of their lives, helping them achieve their full potential. - Mental Health Integration
We will collaborate with mental health professionals to integrate mental health support into our programs. This interdisciplinary approach will ensure that adolescents receive well-rounded care that addresses all aspects of their well-being. By providing mental health support, we can help adolescents develop resilience and coping skills. - Community Collaboration
Engaging with schools, families, and other community stakeholders will be a cornerstone of our adolescent OT program. By fostering strong partnerships, we can create a supportive network that enhances the effectiveness of our services. Collaboration with community partners will allow us to provide comprehensive and coordinated care. - Ongoing Research and Feedback
We are committed to ongoing research and actively seeking feedback from our community. This will help us continuously improve our services and ensure they remain relevant and impactful. By staying informed about the latest research and trends, we can adapt our programs to meet the evolving needs of adolescents.
Service Delivery Model
Using the information obtained through literature, along with the needs assessment, a draft service delivery model was presented to our staff. This model outlines the program structure, age range, and time frames for interventions. Key components include:
- Goal Setting: Tailored to the individual needs of each adolescent.
- Interventions: Based on evidence-based practices and the unique needs of adolescents.
- Evaluation: Use of standardised assessment and evaluation tools to measure progress and outcomes.
Feedback from our allied health staff through focus group discussions was invaluable in refining this model. A client case study example illustrated the potential impact of our program on participants.
Looking Forward
The expansion into adolescent occupational therapy services represents a significant step forward for Focus on Function. We are excited about the potential to make a meaningful difference in the lives of young individuals in our community. Our innovative approach and dedication to meeting the unique needs of adolescents underscore our commitment to being a responsive and forward-thinking service provider.
We believe that by addressing the specific needs of adolescents, we can help them navigate this critical stage of their lives with confidence and support. Our expanded services will provide the necessary tools and resources to empower adolescents to achieve their goals and lead fulfilling lives.
